Julius Caesar

Cowards die many times before their actual deaths.

As a rule, men worry more about what they can't see than about what they can.

Fortune, which has a great deal of power in other matters but especially in war, can bring about great changes in a situation through very slight forces.

I came, I saw, I conquered.

I had rather be first in a village than second at Rome

I love the name of honor, more than I fear death.

In war, events of importance are the result of trivial causes.

It is not these well-fed long-haired men that I fear, but the pale and the hungry-looking.

It is easier to find men who will volunteer to die, than to find those who are willing to endure pain with patience.

Men are nearly always willing to believe what they wish.

No one is so brave that he is not disturbed by something unexpected.

What we wish, we readily believe, and what we ourselves think, we imagine others think also.

Which death is preferably to every other? "The unexpected".

Anotoine de Saint Exupery

A chief is a man who assumes responsibility. He says "I was beaten," he does not say "My men were beaten"

A civilization is a heritage of beliefs, customs, and knowledge slowly accumulated in the course of centuries, elements difficult at times to justify by logic, but justifying themselves as paths when they lead somewhere, since they open up for man his inner distance.

The essence of the candle, it's not the the wax, who leaves traces, but light (Citadel)

Love does not consist in gazing at each other, but in looking outward together in the same direction.

I know but one freedom, and that is the freedom of the mind.

When you give yourself, you receive more than you give.

It is only with the heart that one can see rightly; what is essential is invisible to the eye.

Albert Einstein

Any intelligent fool can make things bigger, more complex, and more violent. It takes a touch of genius -- and a lot of courage -- to move in the opposite direction

I am convinced that He (God) does not play dice

Weakness of attitude becomes weakness of character.

The only real valuable thing is intuition

I want to know God's thoughts; the rest are details.

Great spirits have often encountered violent opposition from weak minds

The secret to creativity is knowing how to hide your sources.

Education is what remains after one has forgotten everything he learned in school.

The important thing is not to stop questioning. Curiosity has its own reason for existing

If A is a success in life, then A equals x plus y plus z. Work is x; y is play; and z is keeping your mouth shut.

Two things are infinite: the universe and human stupidity; and I'm not sure about the the universe.

My religion consists of a humble admiration of the illimitable superior spirit who reveals himself in the slight details we are able to perceive with our frail and feeble mind.

No, this trick won't work...How on earth are you ever going to explain in terms of chemistry and physics so important a biological phenomenon as first love?

The most beautiful thing we can experience is the mysterious. It is the source of all true art and all science. He to whom this emotion is a stranger, who can no longer pause to wonder and stand rapt in awe, is as good as dead: his eyes are closed

The further the spiritual evolution of mankind advances, the more certain it seems to me that the path to genuine religiosity does not lie through the fear of life, and the fear of death, and blind faith, but through striving after rational knowledge.

Not everything that counts can be counted, and not everything that can be counted counts.

A perfection of means, and confusion of aims, seems to be our main problem.

A man should look for what is, and not for what he thinks should be.

Any man who reads too much and uses his own brain too little falls into lazy habits of thinking.

Concern for man and his fate must always form the chief interest of all technical endeavors. Never forget this in the midst of your diagrams and equations.

Honore Balzac

A flow of words is a sure sign of duplicity.

A good husband is never the first to go to sleep at night or the last to awake in the morning.

A young bride is like a plucked flower; but a guilty wife is like a flower that had been walked over.

Between the daylight gambler and the player at night there is the same difference that lies between a careless husband and the lover swooning under his lady's window.

Chance, my dear, is the sovereign deity in child-bearing.

The man whose action habitually bears the stamp of his mind is a genius, but the greatest genius is not always equal to himself, or he would cease to be human.

The more one judges, the less one loves.

There is no such thing as a great talent without great will power.

Those who spend too fast never grow rich.

True love is eternal, infinite, and always like itself. It is equal and pure, without violent demonstrations: it is seen with white hairs and is always young in the heart.

Osho

If you take the responsibility for your life you can start changing it. Slow will be the change, only in the course of time will you start; moving into the world of light and crystallization, but once you are crystallized you will know what real revolution is. Then share your revolution with others; it has to go that way, from heart to heart.

A fool is one who goes on trusting; a fool is one who goes on trusting against all his experience. You deceive him, and he trusts you; and you deceive him again, and he trusts you; and you deceive him again, and he trusts you. Then you will say that he is a fool, he does not learn. His trust is tremendous; his trust is so pure that nobody can corrupt it. Be a fool in the Taoist sense, in the Zen sense. Don't try to create a wall of knowledge around you. Whatsoever experience comes to you, let it happen, and then go on dropping it. Go on cleaning your mind continuously; go on dying to the past so you remain in the present, herenow, as if just born, just a babe. In the beginning it is going to be very difficult. The world will start taking advantage of you...let them. They are poor fellows. Even if you are cheated and deceived and robbed, let it happen, because that which is really yours cannot be robbed from you, that which is really yours nobody can steal from you. And each time you don't allow situations to corrupt you, that opportunity will become an integration inside. Your soul will become more crystallized.

A man who lives through conscience becomes hard. A man who lives through consciousness remains soft. Why?--because a man who has some ideas about how to live, naturally becomes hard. He has continuously to carry his character around himself. That character is like an armor; his protection, his security; his whole life is invested in that character. And he always reacts to situations through the character, not directly. If you ask him a question, his answer is ready-made. That is the sign of a hard person--he is dull, stupid, mechanical. He may be a good computer, but he is not a man. You do something and he reacts in a well- established way. His reaction is predictable; he is a robot. The real man acts spontaneously. If you ask him a question, your question gets a response, not a reaction. He opens his heart to your question, exposes himself to your question, responds to it.

A really religious person has no theology. Yes, he has the experience, he has the truth, he has that luminosity, but he has no theology

All private goals are neurotic. The essential man comes to know, to feel, "I am not separate from the whole, and there is no need to seek and search for any destiny on my own. Things are happening, the world is moving--call it God...he is doing things. They are happening of their own accord. There is no need for me to make any struggle, any effort; there is no need for me to fight for anything. I can relax and be." The essential man is not a doer. The accidental man is a doer. The accidental man is, of course, then in anxiety, tension, stress, anguish, continuously sitting on a volcano. It can erupt any moment, because he lives in a world of uncertainty and believes as if it is certain. This creates tension in his be-ing: he knows deep down that nothing is certain.

All that is great cannot be possessed - and that is one of the most foolish things man goes on doing. We want to possess.

All that you need is just to be silent and listen to existence. There is no need of any religion, there is no need of any God, there is no need of any priesthood, there is no need of any organization

Any human being who is becoming independent of conditionings, of religions, scriptures, prophets and messiahs, has arrived home. He has found the treasure which was hidden in his own being.

Be less of a judge and you will be surprised that when you become a witness and you don't judge yourself, you stop judging others too. And that makes you more human, more compassionate, more understanding.

Become more and more innocent, less knowledgeable and more childlike. Take life as fun - because that's precisely what it is!

Beyond mind, there is an awareness that is intrinsic, that is not given to you by the outside, and is not an idea -- and there is no experiment up to now that has found any center in the brain which corresponds to awareness. The whole work of meditation is to make you aware of all that is "mind" and dis identify yourself from it. That very separation is the greatest revolution that can happen to man. Now you can do and act on only that which makes you more joyous, fulfills you, gives you contentment, makes your life a work of art, a beauty. But this is possible only if the master in you is awake. Right now the master is fast asleep. And the mind, the servant, is playing the role of master. And the servant is created by the outside world, it follows the outside world and its laws. Once your awareness becomes a flame, it burns up the whole slavery that the mind has created. There is no blissfulness more precious than freedom, than being a master of your own destiny.

Creativity is the quality that you bring to the activity that you are doing. It is an attitude, an inner approach - how you look at things.... Not everybody can be a painter - and there is no need also. If everybody is a painter the world will be very ugly; it will be difficult to live! And not everybody can be a dancer, and there is no need. But everybody can be creative. Whatsoever you do, if you do it joyfully, if you do it lovingly, if your act of doing is not purely economical, then it is creative. If you have something growing out of it within you, if it gives you growth, it is spiritual, it is creative, it is divine. You become more divine as you become more creative. All the religions of the world have said God is the creator. I dont know whether he is the creator or not, but one thing I know: the more creative you become, the more godly you become. When your creativity comes to a climax, when your whole life becomes creative, you live in God. So he must be the creator because people who have been creative have been closest to him. Love what you do. Be meditative while you are doing it - whatsoever it is

Do the small things of life with a relaxed awareness. When you are eating, eat totally--chew totally, taste totally, smell totally. Touch your bread, feel the texture. Smell the bread, smell the flavor. Chew it, let it dissolve into your being, and remain conscious--and you are meditating. And then meditation is not separate from life. Whenever meditation is separate from life, something is wrong. It becomes life-negative. Then one starts thinking of going to a monastery or to a Himalayan cave. Then one wants to escape from life, because life seems to be a distraction from meditation. Life is not a distraction, life is an occasion for meditation.

Don't seek, don't search, don't ask, don't knock, don't demand - relax. If you relax, it comes. If you relax, it is there. If you relax, you start vibrating with it.

Drop the fear. Fear was taken up by you in your childhood, unconsciously. Now consciously drop it and be mature. Then the life can be a light which goes on deepening as you go on growing.

I have gained many insights from simple quotations taken from masters of the mind. They reminded me of what it was I was doing again, they put things in a new light, in a new and often broader perspective. Reading different perceptions of the same process is also very enlightening and stimulating at times. I noticed that every time I 'accidentally' read a spiritual quote, it made perfect sense to the situation that I was in at that particular time in my life and it was often exactly what I needed.

In this world the greatest courage is to drop the mind aside. The bravest man is who can see the world without the barrier of the mind, just as it is. It is tremendously different, utterly beautiful. There is nobody who is inferior and there is nobody who is superior -- there are no distinctions.

You can love as many people as you want - that does not mean one day you will go bankrupt, and you will have to declare, 'Now I have no love.' You cannot go bankrupt as far as love is concerned

The mind exists in time, in fact the mind is time; it exists in the past and the future. And remember, time consists of only two tenses, the past and the future. The present is not part of time, the present is part of eternity.

Millions of people are suffering: they want to be loved but they don't know how to love. And love cannot exist as a monologue; it is a dialogue, a very harmonious dialogue.

Gandhi

Honest disagreement is often a good sign of progress.

An unjust law is itself a species of violence. Arrest for its breach is more so.

Freedom is not worth having if it does not connote freedom to err. It passes my comprehension how human beings, be they ever so experienced and able, can delight in depriving other human beings of that precious right.

What difference does it make to the dead, the orphans and the homeless, whether the mad destruction is wrought under the name of totalitarianism or the holy name of liberty or democracy?

I object to violence because when it appears to do good, the good is only temporary, the evil it does is permanent.

We may never be strong enough to be entirely nonviolent in thought, word and deed. But we must keep nonviolence as our goal and make strong progress towards it.

They cannot take away our self-respect if we do not give it to them.

Forgiveness is choosing to love. It is the first skill of self-giving love.

Happiness is when what you think, what you say, and what you do are in harmony

It is unwise to be too sure of one's own wisdom. It is healthy to be reminded that the strongest might weaken and the wisest might err.

One needs to be slow to form convictions, but once formed they must be defended against the heaviest odds.
Strength does not come from physical capacity. It comes from an indomitable will.

When I despair, I remember that all through history the ways of truth and love have always won. There have been tyrants, and murderers, and for a time they can seem invincible, but in the end they always fall. Think of it--always

You must not lose faith in humanity. Humanity is an ocean; if a few drops of the ocean are dirty, the ocean does not become dirty.

Everything has a purpose in life...

My eyes are for the light, for the spring green, for the white snow, for the gray clouds and for the blue of the sky, for the stars of the night and for the incredible miracle that around me there are so many wonderful people.
My lips are for kissing, and my hands to be gentle and sensitive. My heart is for love, for warmth and for those who live in loneliness and chill.
Nothing is useless. Everything has its deep significance.
Then why I'm not happy?
Are my eyes closed?
My mouth is bitter?
My hands are 'claws' without heart?
Or my heart is dry?
If your life ever seems too difficult, try doing a little like a clown, who cries in his heart, and yet, laughing, is playing the violin for a child to heal his heart tears.

A capacity for love

You will find as you look back upon your life that the moments when you have really lived are the moments when you have done things in the spirit of love.
There is in each of us, no matter how humble, a capacity for love. Even if our lives have not taken the course we had envisioned, even if we are less than the shape of our dreams, we are part of the human family. Somewhere, in the most inconsequential corners of our lives, is the opportunity for love.
If I am blind, I can run my hand across the back of a shell and celebrate beauty. If I have no legs, I can sit in quiet wonder before the restless murmurs of the sea. If I am wounded in spirit, I can reach out my hand to those who are hurting. If I am lonely, I can go among those who are desperate for love. There is no tragedy or injustice so great, no life so small and inconsequential, that we cannot bear witness to the light in the quiet acts and hidden moments of our days.
And who can say which of these acts and moments will make a difference? The universe is a vast and magical membrane of meaning, stretching across time and space, and it is not given to us to know her secrets and her ways. Perhaps we were placed here to meet the challenge of a single moment; perhaps the touch we give will cause the touch that will change the world.

I believe God is managing affairs and that He doesn't need any advice from me. With God in charge, I believe everything will work out for the best in the end. So what is there to worry about.

I cannot discover that anyone knows enough to say definitely what is and what is not possible.

I do not believe a man can ever leave his business. He ought to think of it by day and dream of it by night.

If everyone is moving forward together, then success takes care of itself.

If money is your hope for independence you will never have it. The only real security that a man will have in this world is a reserve of knowledge, experience, and ability.

If there is any one secret of success, it lies in the ability to get the other person's point of view and see things from that person's angle as well as from your own.

If you think you can do a thing or think you can't do a thing, you're right.

It has been my observation that most people get ahead during the time that others waste.

It is not the employer who pays the wages. Employers only handle the money. It is the customer who pays the wages.

It is well enough that people of the nation do not understand our banking and monetary system, for if they did, I believe there would be a revolution before tomorrow morning.

Life is a series of experiences, each one of which makes us bigger, even though sometimes it is hard to realize this. For the world was built to develop character, and we must learn that the setbacks and grieves which we endure help us in our marching onward.

Money is like an arm or leg - use it or lose it.

Most people spend more time and energy going around problems than in trying to solve them.

My best friend is the one who brings out the best in me.

Nothing is particularly hard if you divide it into small jobs.

Obstacles are those frightful things you see when you take your eyes off your goal.

One of the greatest discoveries a man makes, one of his great surprises, is to find he can do what he was afraid he couldn't do.

Quality means doing it right when no one is looking.

Speculation is only a word covering the making of money out of the manipulation of prices, instead of supplying goods and services.

The competitor to be feared is one who never bothers about you at all, but goes on making his own business better all the time.

The highest use of capital is not to make more money, but to make money do more for the betterment of life.

The man who will use his skill and constructive imagination to see how much he can give for a dollar, instead of how little he can give for a dollar, is bound to succeed.

The only real security that a man can have in this world is a reserve of knowledge, experience and ability.

There are no big problems, there are just a lot of little problems.
You can't build a reputation on what you are going to do.

There is joy in work. There is no happiness except in the realization that we have accomplished something.

There is no man living that can not do more than he thinks he can.

There is one rule for the industrialist and that is: Make the best quality of goods possible at the lowest cost possible, paying the highest wages possible.

Thinking is the hardest work there is, which is probably the reason why so few engage in it.

Time and money spent in helping men to do more for themselves is far better than mere giving.

We don't want tradition. We want to live in the present and the only history that is worth a tinker's dam is the history we make today.

Wealth, like happiness, is never attained when sought after directly. It comes as a by-product of providing a useful service.

What's right about America is that although we have a mess of problems, we have great capacity - intellect and resources - to do some thing about them.

Whatever you have, you must either use or lose.

When everything seems to be going against you, remember that the airplane takes off against the wind, not with it.

Whether you believe you can do a thing or not, you are right.

Whether you think that you can, or that you can't, you are usually right.

You can't learn in school what the world is going to do next year.

Harisson Frod

All my friends were going off to be professionals, and I said I wanted to be an actor.

Bikes and planes aren't about going fast or having fun; they're toys, but serious ones.

Directing is too hard, it takes too much time, and it doesn't pay very well.

Everything I do, I'm sort of half in, half out.

Hollywood's got its own particular environment.

I accrued anger from people's low opinion of me and my work, and for the work I might be capable of.

I am not the first man who wanted to make changes in his life at 60 and I won't be the last. It is just that others can do it with anonymity.

I could take Sean Connery in a fight... I could definitely take him.

I enjoyed carpentry, and it was very good to me for 12 years.

I get mad when people call me an action movie star. Indiana Jones is an adventure film, a comic book, a fantasy.

I have relationships with people I'm working with, based on our combined interest. It doesn't make the relationship any less sincere, but it does give it a focus that may not last beyond the experience.

I love the comic opportunities that come up in the context of a father-son relationship.

I wanted to be a forest ranger or a coal man. At a very early age, I knew I didn't want to do what my dad did, which was work in an office.

I wanted to live the life, a different life. I didn't want to go to the same place every day and see the same people and do the same job. I wanted interesting challenges.

I was always very grateful I was never hot. In the entire length of my career, I haven't been the most adored.

I was completely unprepared for the public spectacle my private life became, and didn't like it a bit.

I was never that much a focus of interest in my career. I'm aware of that now, which doesn't give me a lot of pleasure.

I'm addicted to Altoids. I call them 'acting pills.'

I've always been somewhere down from the top, so I've never had to suffer being knocked off the top.

I've never wanted to be the boss.

If I were a serious person, I'd probably have a real job.

If you're asking me to acknowledge that I've gotten older, I can do that.

It took me a long time to figure out how to act, and how to conduct myself in the business so I could get what I felt I needed to support my potential and give them what they wanted.

It's very little trouble for me to accomodate my fans, unless I'm actually taking a pee at the time.

My character is meant to know nothing about rap, and not to like it very much, but I know about it, because my kids make me listen to it. There's some rap I do like very much. I like Eminem, Blackalicious.

My goal was just to work regularly. I didn't ever expect to be rich or famous. I wanted to be a working character actor.

My older kids are fantastic people. It can't be the result of my influence on them.

Parenting is an impossible job at any age.

Really, what are the options? Levi's or Wranglers. And you just pick one. It's one of those life choices.

Some actors couldn't figure out how to withstand the constant rejection. They couldn't see the light at the end of the tunnel.

Sometimes I try to improve the language, the lines, or the delivery, but I don't ad-lib because I think that makes it really hard for everybody else involved.

The actor's popularity is evanescent; applauded today, forgotten tomorrow.

The focus and the concentration and the attention to detail that flying takes is a kind of meditation. I find it restful and engaging, and other things slip away.

The kindest word to describe my performance in school was Sloth.

The third time you say a thing it sounds like a lie.

There is no child left within me, none whatsoever.

To me, success is choice and opportunity.

We all have big changes in our lives that are more or less a second chance.

What I observed about my fellow actors was that most gave up very easily.

When I first started out, I was a bad actor.

Declaration of principles-Paulo Coelho

] All human beings are different. And should do everything possible to continue to be so.
2] Each human being has been granted two courses of action: that of deed and that of contemplation. Both lead to the same place.
3] Each human being has been granted two qualities: power and gift. Power drives a person to meet his/her destiny, his gift obliges that person to share with others which is good in him/her. A human being must know when to use power, and when to use compassion.
4] Each human being has been granted a virtue: the capacity to choose. For he/she who does not use this virtue, it becomes a curse – and others will always choose for him/her.
5] Each human being has the right to two blessings, which are: the blessing to do right, and the blessing to err. In the latter case, there is always a path of learning leading to the right way.
6] Each human being has his own sexual profile, and should exercise it without guilt – provided he does not oblige others to exercise it with him/her.
7] Each human being has his own Personal Legend to be fulfilled, and this is the reason he is in the world. The Personal Legend is manifest in his enthusiasm for what she/he does.
Single paragraph – the Personal Legend may be abandoned for a certain time, provided one does not forget it and returns as soon as possible.
8] Each man has a feminine side, and each woman has a masculine side. It is necessary to use discipline with intuition, and to use intuition objectively.
9] Each human being must know two languages: the language of society and the language of the omens. The first serves for communication with others. The second serves to interpret messages from God.
10] Each human being has the right to seek out joy, joy being understood as something which makes one content – not necessarily that which makes others content.
11] Each human being must keep alight within him the sacred flame of madness. And must behave like a normal person.
12] The only faults considered grave are the following: not respecting the rights of one’s neighbor, letting oneself be paralyzed by fear, feeling guilty, thinking one does not deserve the good and bad which occurs in life, and being a coward.
Paragraph 1 – we shall love our adversaries, but not make alliances with them. They are placed in our way to test our sword, and deserve the respect of our fight.
Paragraph 2 – we shall choose our adversaries, not the other way around.
12A] We hereby declare the end to the wall dividing the sacred from the profane: from now on, all is sacred.
14] Everything which is done in the present, affects the future by consequence, and the past by redemption.
15] The impossible is possible

Paulo Coelho

Everything that happens once can never happen again. But everything that happens twice will surely happen a third time.

You drown not by falling into a river, but by staying submerged in it

You are what you do, and not what you think you should do

Enjoy life but be attentive. Don't think there are no beasts just because the forest is silent

Don't allow your mind tell your heart what to do.The mind gives up easily

Fear of failure leads to failure

Curiosity kills the cat, but helps the tiger to live

The art of sex is the art of controlled abandon

Don’t think it can’t happen, because it can.

I may not recorgnize God’s hand each day, but I know it's there

I know many people who are going nowhere at an alarming speed

The simple things are the most extraordinary, but only a pure heartl can recognize them

Fear of suffering is worse than the suffering itself

You may not know your path, but you must know what you don't want in life

Each man has a feminine side, and each woman has a masculine side. It is necessary to use discipline with intuition, and to use intuition objectively.

Impossible is possible

Life: each note leaves a memory, but only the melody tells the whole story

With time...J.L.Borges

After a while, man learns to perceive the subtile difference between to support and to chain a soul and learns that love does not mean that you sleep with someone and having someone next to you is not synonymous with safety and so, man begins to learn ... that kisses are not contracts and presents are not promises and so the man begins to accept defeats with his head up and eyes open and learn to build all the roads based on today and now, for the land of 'tomorrow 'is too uncertain for plans ... and the future always has a lot of alternatives, which stop halfway.
And after a while, man learns that if too much, even the life-giving warmth of the sun, burns.
So he  begins to plant his own garden and beautifies his own soul instead of waiting for someone to bring him flowers, and learns that really can support, as indeed has the power, that's really valuable, and humans learns,  learns ,... and learns each day.
With time you learn that to stay with someone because it offers a good future means that sooner or later you will want to go back to the past.
With time you understand that only one who is able to love you with your flaws, without trying to change you, you can bring all the happiness you want.
With time you understand that true friends are not counted and the one who does not fight for them sooner or later it will be surrounded by false friends. With time you learn that words said in a moment of anger, can continue to make harm the rest of your life .
With time you learn that the excuse is something anyone can do, but forgiveness it is something  really big hearts can do.
With time you understand that if you seriously injured a friend, is very likely that his friendship will never be the same intensity.
In time you realize that although you are happy with your friends in a day you will cry for those you let them go.
In time you realize that every experience lived with each being, will not ever happen again.
In time you realize who humiliates and despises a human being, sooner or later will suffer the same humiliation and contempt, but multiplied square.
With time you learn that if youhurry or force things to happen, in the end, they will not be as expected.
In time you realize that in reality, the future was not the best but when you are living right at the moment.
With time you will see that although you feel happy with who you are around, you will miss the ones that were with you yesterday and they went and are no longer here ..
With time you will learn that trying to forgive or being forgiven , to say that you love, or that you miss someone, to say you need, to say that you want to be friends, before a tomb, has no sense.

But unfortunately, all is learned only with time ...

Paradoxul vremurilor noastre

dar minti mai înguste. Cheltuim mai mult, dar avem mai putin;
Vorbim prea mult, iubim prea rar si uram prea des.
Am adaugat ani vietii si nu viata anilor.

Apoi, a luat o cutie cu pietricele si le-a turnat in borcan, scuturándu-l usor.
Apoi profesorul a luat o cutie cu nisip si l-a turnat in borcan, scuturándu-l usor. Desigur, nisipul a umplut spatiul ramas liber.

RESTUL  E  DOAR  NISIP!

Napoleon Bonaparte

A celebrated people lose dignity upon a closer view.

A leader is a dealer in hope.

A revolution can be neither made nor stopped. The only thing that can be done is for one of several of its children to give it a direction by dint of victories.

A throne is only a bench covered with velvet.

Ambition never is in a greater hurry that I; it merely keeps pace with circumstances and with my general way of thinking.

Doctors will have more lives to answer for in the next world than even we generals.

In order to govern, the question is not to follow out a more or less valid theory but to build with whatever materials are at hand. The inevitable must be accepted and turned to advantage.

It is the cause, not the death, that makes the martyr

Men are moved by two levers only: fear and self interest.

Nothing is more difficult, and therefore more precious, than to be able to decide.

Power is my mistress. I have worked too hard at her conquest to allow anyone to take her away from me.

The people to fear are not those who disagree with you, but those who disagree with you and are too cowardly to let you know.

The torment of precautions often exceeds the dangers to be avoided. It is sometimes better to abandon one's self to destiny.

The truest wisdom is a resolute determination.

Emily Bronte

A good heart will help you to a bonny face, my lad and a bad one will turn the bonniest into something worse than ugly.

Having leveled my palace, don't erect a hovel and complacently admire your own charity in giving me that for a home.

Honest people don't hide their deeds.

I've dreamt in my life dreams that have stayed with me ever after.

Whatever our souls are made of, his and mine are the same.

Love is like the wild rose-briar; Friendship like the holly-tree. The holly is dark when the rose-briar blooms, but which will bloom most constantly?

If I could I would always work in silence and obscurity, and let my efforts be known by their results.

Thomas Mann

A great truth is a truth whose opposite is also a truth.

A man lives not only his personal life, as an individual, but also, consciously or unconsciously, the life of his epoch and his contemporaries.

An art whose medium is language will always show a high degree of critical creativeness, for speech is itself a critique of life: it names, it characterizes, it passes judgment, in that it creates.

Animals do not admire each other. A horse does not admire its companion.

Democracy is timelessly human, and timelessness always implies a certain amount of potential youthfulness.

For I must tell you that we artists cannot tread the path of Beauty without Eros keeping company with us and appointing himself as our guide.

For to be poised against fatality, to meet adverse conditions gracefully, is more than simple endurance; it is an act of aggression, a positive triumph.

For the sake of goodness and love, man shall let death have no sovereignty over his thoughts.

Respectable means rich, and decent means poor. I should die if I heard my family called decent.

Solitude gives birth to the original in us, to beauty unfamiliar and perilous- to poetry. But also, it gives birth to the opposite: to the perverse, the illicit, the absurd.

The only religious way to think of death is as part and parcel of life

There is something suspicious about music, gentlemen. I insist that she is, by her nature, equivocal. I shall not be going too far in saying at once that she is politically suspect.

Time has no divisions to mark its passage, there is never a thunder-storm or blare of trumpets to announce the beginning of a new month or year. Even when a new century begins it is only we mortals who ring bells and fire off pistols.
